O-ring design & selection guide

Understand O-ring hardness, Shore A, groove design, tolerances, pressure and temperature ratings for static, reciprocating and rotary service.

O-ring hardness & Shore A

O-ring Shore A hardness describes a compound’s indentation hardness under a defined test method. It is one specification item, not a pressure rating or proof of chemical resistance.

Record the required Shore A value, tolerance and compound code. A harder ring is not automatically a better seal; assembly, clearance, squeeze and motion still need review.

O-ring groove design & tolerance

The O-ring groove, or gland, must be considered with the ring dimensions. Include groove width and depth, clearances, surface conditions, sealing direction and the approved drawing revision.

O-ring design also depends on the dimensional variation of the surrounding components. Specify the O-ring tolerance and the relevant standard class; do not derive a production groove from the nominal size chart alone.

The website’s OD calculator describes the free ring only. It does not calculate squeeze, stretch, gland fill or extrusion clearance.

O-ring pressure rating & temperature rating

There is no single O-ring pressure rating for every ring of a given size. The compound, hardness, gap, pressure direction, temperature and support arrangement all matter.

An O-ring temperature rating must relate to the actual compound and medium. Give minimum, continuous and short-duration peak temperatures, including cleaning and start-up cycles. A broad family property table is not a finished-product rating.

Static and dynamic O-rings

Static O-rings
Used where the mating sealing surfaces do not move relative to each other during normal service. Include pressure cycles and assembly conditions.
Dynamic O-rings
Used where relative motion occurs. Specify speed, friction, lubrication, surface condition and wear requirements.
Reciprocating O-rings
For back-and-forth movement, provide stroke, cycle rate and the piston or rod arrangement.
Rotary O-rings
Rotating service needs a specific design assessment, including shaft speed, heat and lubrication. A static-seal selection does not establish rotary suitability.

O-ring selection guide: the complete brief

  1. Identify the application, medium and sealing position.
  2. Confirm ID × CS, units, standard and drawing tolerance.
  3. Specify compound and Shore A hardness.
  4. Record pressure, temperatures and movement.
  5. Check gland design, assembly and any support rings.
  6. Agree on quantity, evidence and acceptance criteria.
